Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy

Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy is a medical intervention that involves the use of a device to deliver low-level electrical signals to the spinal cord, to alleviate chronic pain. It is a type of neuromodulation therapy designed to interfere with pain signals before they reach the brain. This can be particularly useful for individuals experiencing chronic pain that has not responded well to other treatments.

Here's an overview of how spinal cord stimulation therapy works:

• Implantation of Device:  A small device, known as a spinal cord stimulator, is surgically implanted under the skin. The device consists of a pulse generator (similar to a pacemaker) and thin wires with electrodes.
• Electrode Placement: Electrodes are carefully placed along the spinal cord or in specific nerve root areas, depending on the location of the pain. The electrodes are positioned in a way to target the nerves transmitting pain signals.
• Electrical Stimulation: The stimulator generates low-level electrical impulses that travel through the electrodes to the spinal cord. These impulses interfere with the transmission of pain signals, modifying the way the brain perceives pain.
• Adjustment and Control: The patient typically has control over the stimulation, being able to adjust the settings within limits set by the healthcare provider. This allows for personalized pain management.

Conditions Treated with Spinal Cord Stimulation

• Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS)
• Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
• Neuropathic pain
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Ischemic limb pain
• Chronic back or leg pain
